da pinnacle: Former England and Manchester United defender Gary Neville has slammed the Three Lions after his involvement against Switzerland, as quoted by The Evening Standard.
What’s the word?
da betway: Shining light for Tottenham and his country, also captaining the latter, Harry Kane is always going to be one of the first names on the teamsheet. However, Gareth Southgate’s decision to use the striker off the bench against Switzerland has attracted criticism.
The World Cup Golden Boot winner started the 2-1 defeat to Spain in England’s inaugural UEFA Nations League match on Saturday and, despite being rested from the start for Tuesday’s friendly with Switzerland, was still called upon in the second half.
Amongst those concerned about the treatment of Kane is Gary Neville, who suggested that the fan favourite needs to be rested for both physical and mental reasons, in comments made on Sky Sports’ live coverage of the match as quoted by The Evening Standard.
What was said?
“I am concerned about Harry Kane. Since 2015 he has played 175 matches and he’s struggling. Forget the physical side, he needs a mental break as well.
“I don’t think he should have been here for the two weeks. I think there is a welfare thing in terms of looking after players and he has not had enough of a break since 2015.”
Is he right?
The comments from Neville are likely to add fresh fuel to the club v country debate and it is likely that England will earn the most criticism. However, while Southgate should have given Kane time off from international duty, Tottenham deserve their fair share of the blame too.

Kane has played all but two minutes of Tottenham’s Premier League campaign so far and is unlikely to earn a break in the imminent future as Spurs face crucial tests against Liverpool and Inter Milan in the week ahead.
So, while it is easy to blame England, Spurs need to take responsibility for the welfare of their own player and Mauricio Pochettino is guilty of mistakes too, as he neglected to sign an able back-up to Kane during the summer transfer window and left his side lacking depth up top.
