Fabio Borini
After a few shock chances to prove himself in the Liverpool first-team following a summer of uncertainty, Borini looks no closer to being a Reds regular. The Italian turned down both QPR and Sunderland during the last transfer window in a bid to have one last crack at life at Anfield, but the opportunity presented by Daniel Sturridge’s injury is one he hasn’t seized.
In truth, Borini has barely looked like a Liverpool player since his 2012 arrival, with a lack of pace, power and star quality having frustrated fans. The 23-year-old offers plenty of energy and a hard-working attitude, but with the Reds looking to challenge for top honours, Borini is unlikely to make the difference.
Interest from the likes of AC Milan and Inter Milan is rumoured to be strong, so a January exit is on the cards. However, Liverpool are unlikely to get close to the £14m Sunderland reportedly offered for his signature.
Mamadou Sakho
Despite being the ‘marquee signing’ of the summer of 2013, Sakho has been inconsistent at best. The Frenchman always appears to be just a few seconds from a catastrophic error, with his gangly frame and long legs reminiscent of Djimi Traore.
After storming out of Anfield following news that Brendan Rodgers had dropped him from his match-day squad for the Merseyside derby, the future looks uncertain for the 24-year-old, despite his public apology.
On his day Sakho is a commanding and athletic centre-back, but with Liverpool in desperate need of a leader – which they may address in January – the former PSG man could be one to make way…
Lucas Leiva
Injuries seem to have robbed Lucas of pace and energy that once made him a nailed-on Liverpool starter and one of the better defensive midfielders in the Premier League. The Brazilian has made a few brief cameos for the Reds this season, and in each showing his play has appeared laboured and a little off beat in comparison to some of his other midfield partners.
Like Borini, Lucas was linked with a summer exit, and speculation is likely to return ahead of the January transfer window. Napoli are one side thought to be keen, yet their interest may hinge on the future of manager Rafael Benitez – who signed the 27-year-old back in 2007.
Suso
Despite being dubbed a rising star from the age of 14 – when he arrived at Liverpool – Suso’s future looks bleak. The silky playmaker is behind the likes of Raheem Sterling, Adam Lallana, Philippe Coutinho and Lazar Markovic in the Anfield pecking order, and despite the wealth of games Brendan Rodgers faces, the 20-year-old is unlikely to get many chances.
Suso netted in the Capital One Cup win over Middlesbrough, but with interest from AC Milan string, a January exit looks to be on the cards. Failing that, the Spaniard may leave at the end of the season when his contract expires.
Brad Jones
If reports that Victor Valdes could be a Liverpool player by the end of the month are to be believed, then Jones’ presence at Anfield will be no longer needed next year. You can count on one hand the number of outings the Australian has made in 2014, with Simon Mignolet having held down the No. 1 berth, and if the Spanish veteran is snapped up, then reserve football awaits.
The list of suitors for the stopper is likely to be short, but it may be time for Jones to put himself out there after an action-free four years on Merseyside.
