In an exclusive interview with the Independent, Damien Comolli – formerly the Director of Football at both Liverpool and Tottenham – revealed all about the foundations that he put in place that have led to both Champions League finalists becoming two of Europe’s best run clubs.
Comolli, who is now with Fenerbahce, left Liverpool shortly before the end of the 2011/12 campaign, in which the Reds made the final of the League Cup and the FA Cup final under Kenny Dalglish.
He was responsible for a number of high-profile signings at Anfield.
Has Alisson been Liverpool’s most important signing of the season? Check out the video below to find out why Jurgen Klopp thinks so…
The likes of Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson, Andy Carroll, Luis Suarez, Jose Enrique and Sebastian Coates all arrived on Merseyside after Comolli had given them the green light.
Out of all of those players, some good, some horrendous, which one do you think was mentioned as a ‘massive mistake’ by owners Fenway Sports Group when Comolli was sacked?
Surely it was Adam, right? A man who was cast aside after just one season at the club following a £7.5m arrival from relegated Blackpool.
Or if not him, it must’ve been Carroll. a £35m flop who netted just 11 goals in 58 appearances for the club.
It was neither. Nor was it Downing. Or Enrique. Or Coates.
The player that FSG called a ‘massive mistake’ when sacking Comolli was Henderson, a man who is about to captain the Reds in their second successive Champions League final.
Admittedly, he wasn’t great in his first season at the club following a £20m arrival from Sunderland, but you have to take into account that it was the youngster’s first venture away from his boyhood club at just 20 years of age.
Surely it would’ve been fairer on FSG’s part to point out the failings of experienced pros such as Downing, Carroll and Adam, two of whom cost the same price or more than Henderson did.
Henderson has since proved that he wasn’t a ‘massive mistake’ by earning the captain’s armband following Steven Gerrard’s departure, and the Liverpool fans love him for his unwavering commitment to proving people wrong.
