Under Chris Wilder’s stewardship, Sheffield United have had a superb season so far this year, and currently sit fourth in the table and very much one of the favourites to gain automatic promotion.
United had been one of the form teams at the start of the season but of late, The Blades have suffered a slight dip in form and were most recently held to a draw by their city rivals Sheffield Wednesday before the international break.
Before that, they been beaten by Nottingham Forest and were held to a draw by the out of form Stoke City.
Central to that superb form has been the goalscoring exploits of fan favourite and club legend, Billy Sharp who’s scored 10 goals in the Championship and is one of the best forwards in the league.
The Sheffield man is the second highest goalscorer in the league and is only two behind Brentford’s Neal Maupay.
The Sheffield local is thriving in his third spell with the club following what has been a long and journeyed career in the lower divisions.
After a fairly poor spell with Leeds United, Sharp move to Sheffield United in 2015/16 and made an instant impact on the side as he scored 21 goals in his first season with the club. The following year he hit 30 and helped guide his hometown club back into the Championship.
He may not have the pace of some in the league and he may not be able to beat players with the ball at his feet but what he does do is excel at is coming alive in the box and is probably one of the best out and out finishers in the league.
In a side that looks to play good attacking football and overload the opposition’s half, Sharp benefits from getting a lot of chances and due to his superior finishing, he usually put them away.
Some may look to the all-round game of Kemar Roofe, the dynamism of Dwight Gayle or the constant shot taker in Maupay but there’s no doubt that Sharp is right up there with the best in the league.
With the hotshot in the side, Sheffield United have a player who might just take the side back into the Premier League and maybe even keep them there.
