da bet sport: After Chelsea made the first big signing of the January window by sealing a deal for Christian Pulisic, Everton must look to capitalise on the surplus of wingers on the books at Stamford Bridge by moving for Willian in the summer.
What’s the word?
da heads bet: Well, on January 2 the Blues completed a move for long-term target Pulisic with the Statesman set to be loaned back to Dortmund immediately before linking up with his new club at the end of the season – similar to Naby Keita’s Liverpool transfer from fellow Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.
Once the 20-year-old does officially join Maurizio Sarri and co, there will be a plethora of wide options to choose from with the Italian boss making his intentions to sign yet another winger clear and the club rejecting approaches for young star Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Like Sarri, Everton chief Marco Silva is gradually putting his stamp on the team he inherited in the summer with the likes of Richarlison and Andre Gomes following the former Watford boss to Goodison Park, but the Toffees still look stale in one area in particular and the signing of Willian would solve that.
Woeful Walcott
Theo Walcott is widely regarded as the one that got away – the speedster has never reached the potential that he had in his early days at Arsenal, where he was billed as England’s next big thing, and is now proving on Merseyside that he never will.
The 29-year-old has been awful this season and is a glaring weak-point in Silva’s attack as he scores just three goals in 21 Premier League appearances – finding a replacement for the former Gunner is paramount if Everton are to take a step up.
Willian can be exactly that as he may find his chances become limited in the summer with Pulisic’s impending arrival – his finishing is solid, he’s an enormous threat when stood over a free-kick and will work his socks off.
The only downside to this one from an Everton point of view is that the Brazilian is soon to be entering his twilight years and, at 30, only has a couple more years at the top of his game but, regardless, the former Shakhtar man would be a huge upgrade on Walcott, who isn’t getting any younger either.
