da brwin: Everton, much like many mid-table clubs, have been a model of inconsistency throughout this season.
da dobrowin: The stunning performances of Romelu Lukaku are really deserving of far more from the rest of the team, but he has consistently been let down by sloppy showings from the defensive third of the team, while Gerard Deulofeu has had to be managed carefully in the heavy run of fixtures.
Most sides will be looking to add to their squad in this window, and even Bill Kenwright may dip into his shallow pockets if Martinez is lucky.
One player that we think the Toffees should take very seriously is Jermain Defoe.
The Sunderland striker still has the nose for goal, despite his advancing years, and he would surely be available for quite a small fee.
The budget at Goodison Park isn’t exactly on the same level as the big boys so it might be best to go for someone with years on their side.
Here are FIVE top reasons we think Everton should go after Defoe..
Less said about Arouna..
Kone followed Roberto Martinez from Wigan to Everton and the African star has not been a successful transfer for any party, really.
His bleach blonde hair has been the brightest part of his spell on Merseyside with both injuries and lack of minutes damaging his reputation.
Defoe would be a marked upgrade on Kone, despite his lack of link-up play, the ex-Spurs striker would be far more of a goal threat.
Big Rom’s Workload
Largely due to Kone’s lack of reliability, Lukaku has to do the brunt of the forward work for Everton these days.
There is little question over Lukaku’s physical power, but the Belgian is going to encounter injuries at some stage in his career and it will leave the Toffees looking very short.
Since his move from Chelsea, rests have been few and far between and Defoe could at least take a bit of the workload.
Wise head amongst headless Chickens
They are a highly talented squad, but Everton’s team has a tendency to run around like headless chickens at the moment.
In the heat of the game, it might be reassuring to see a more experienced and calm head in the attacking third and keep tabs on the excitability of Barkley, Deulofeu and Lukaku.
Super-Sub
Even if Defoe wasn’t to start many games, the journeyman striker would be one of the most ideal super sub strikers you could imagine.
Think of the role that Javier Hernandez played at United..
Trusted Finisher
Trusted finishers are few and far between at the moment so the Toffees would do well to snap up one of the Premier League’s all time top scorers.
Defoe is going to find the net when given a clear chance and not many teams can boast a player of his pedigree in a supporting role.
