da heads bet: Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has backed Steven Taylor for a place in the England squad, following the defender’s impressive start to the season.
The Tyneside club have kept three clean sheets in their four Premier League games so far this campaign, and the Magpies man in charge believes his centre back should be rewarded with international recognition.
“Steven Taylor is probably playing the best football of his career for me. I think he has a chance of being involved in England again. I think the management should come and have a look at him, he’s doing that well. He is a good player, Steven,” the former West Ham boss told The Daily Mail.
England have a number of strong players in the heart of their defence, with established stars such as John Terry and Rio Ferdinand being backed up by the likes of Gary Cahill and Phil Jones.
Despite this, Pardew feels Taylor deserves a place in Fabio Capello’s squad, and has invited the Italian to come and watch him play.
“I do see a tendency of players to be picked elsewhere than in the north-east. Steven Taylor is definitely playing at a level where he should be considered, in my view.
“I don’t know how many times the England manager has seen us this year or seen us last year or has been to games in the north-east, but he would be welcome, most certainly,” he concluded.
Newcastle are on the road at the weekend, as they travel to take on Aston Villa on Saturday.
